MVVM software pattern
The benefits of using the MVVM pattern are as follows:
- If there is an existing model implementation that encapsulates existing business logic, it can be difficult or risky to change it. In this scenario, the view model acts as an adapter for the model classes and allows you to avoid making major changes to the model code.
- Developers can create unit tests for the view model and model, without using the view. Unit tests for the view model can exercise exactly the same functionality that the view uses.
- The application user interface can be redesigned without touching the code, provided the view is fully implemented in XAML. Therefore, a new version of the view should work with the existing view model.
- Designers and developers can work independently and simultaneously on their components during the development process. Designers can focus on the view, while developers can work on the view model and model components.
The key to using MVVM effectively lies in understanding how to factor application code into the correct classes and understanding how classes interact. The following sections analyze the responsibilities of each of the classes in the MVVM pattern.
The view model implements properties and commands to which the view can link data and notifies the view of any status changes through change notification events. The properties and commands provided by the view model define the functionality that the user interface will offer, but the view determines how that functionality will be displayed.
View-to-view model connection
View models can be connected to views using the Xamarin.Forms data link capabilities. There are many approaches that can be used to build views and view models and associate them at runtime. These approaches are divided into two categories, known as first view composition and first view model composition. Choosing to see the first composition and see the first composition of the model is a matter of preference and complexity. However, all approaches share the same goal, which is for the view to have a view model assigned to its BindingContext property.
With the first view composition, the application conceptually consists of views that connect to the view models on which they depend.
